Paris: French authorities have launched an investigation after an attempted break-in at the Musée de Grenoble in southeastern France, prompting the museum to strengthen its security measures amid growing concerns over attacks targeting cultural institutions.
According to officials, two suspects attempted to enter the museum's northwestern wing by smashing a window during the night. However, a security guard responded immediately after the alarm system was triggered, forcing the intruders to flee before police arrived at the scene.
Investigators are examining surveillance camera footage and other evidence recovered from the site, including a handheld lantern left behind by the suspects. Authorities believe the individuals had previously surveyed the museum and may have been targeting one of its most prestigious galleries.
The gallery houses internationally renowned artworks, including Pablo Picasso's Woman Reading (1920), one of the museum's most valuable pieces. The painting was donated to the city of Grenoble in 1921 and forms part of the museum's distinguished modern art collection.
The attempted burglary comes amid heightened concerns over the security of French museums. France has witnessed a series of high-profile incidents involving cultural institutions in recent months, including a break-in at the Louvre in 2025 and other attempted thefts targeting valuable artefacts and museum collections.
The Musée de Grenoble has now joined a growing list of museums that have faced security threats, including the Musée du Pays Châtillonnais – Trésor de Vix and the Musée Lalique, following recent attempts to steal culturally significant objects.
French authorities said the investigation remains ongoing as police work to identify the suspects and determine whether they are linked to other recent attacks on museums across the country. Museum officials have meanwhile reinforced security protocols to safeguard the institution's collections and protect visitors and staff.
